A wish for company
You'd like someone to be with. The wish is simple enough to say over a cup of tea, though people tend to wrap it in more magic than it needs.
The wish, in everyday words
Maybe you want a friend who knows how you take your tea, a companion for the long afternoons, a love, or a voice in the next chair besides the radio. Some people feel the wish as too many silent evenings in a row. Others feel it in a crowded city with a phone full of almost-plans. Every version is welcome here. Arcana Mentis won't give you words to recite at the ceiling, and it won't tell you the universe hands out people to anyone who wants company badly enough.
That story has hurt a lot of kind people. Here, intention means attention pointed at something you truly want, followed by a step a neighbor could see. You can want people and still be a whole person on a Tuesday when nobody calls. The empty chair doesn't mean you failed some hidden test.
What this page can't do
This page can't deliver a partner or a friend. It can't promise that a message will be answered, that a group will save you a chair, or that loneliness will lift by a certain date. If you're already seeing a doctor or counselor, keep going, and keep taking any prescribed medicine as prescribed.
If the loneliness has turned into a crisis, or you're frightening yourself with how alone you feel, stop reading and talk to a person. In the United States, call or text 988 (https://988lifeline.org/). Outside the United States, call your local emergency number or a local crisis line. Everything on this page is about your own steps, so you won't find any ritual or trick for managing another person into staying. Company that has to be managed ends up feeling like a performance for both of you.
One small step
Choose a step small enough to finish this week, and small enough that if it doesn't work out, it won't feel like proof you're unwanted. Treat it as an experiment. You could send one short note to someone you already know, saying you thought of them and you'd like a visit or a call. You could go to one ordinary place where people already gather, like a library hour, a faith group if that's still yours, or a class, and stay as long as feels right. You could also say hello to the neighbor whose name you know and have never used.
If your evenings vanish into a phone, put it down for one night and make a plan out loud with a real person. If you're not sure what goes on in town, ask at the library which groups meet there. Write the goal on paper if that helps, with one step and a day under it. The step is the part your own hands can do, and the result belongs to other people, who are free to choose.
If the step is met with silence
Sometimes the note goes unanswered. You may come home more aware of the wish than when you left, and that hurts. It doesn't mean you broke some hidden law, because there isn't one. You can rest, change the step, or put more care into a friendship you already have. Go easy on yourself, and go easy on the town too.
If someone does come, they come as a person, free to stay or go. If nobody comes this month, you still told the truth about what you want and took a real step. You can hope again and invite again. Set out a second cup if you like, and enjoy your own tea either way.
If you need care
If you're in crisis in the United States, call or text 988 (https://988lifeline.org/) now. Outside the United States, call your local emergency number or a local crisis line. If loneliness or a low mood keeps hanging on, talk with your doctor, and keep taking any prescribed medicine as prescribed until you've decided on any change together. The longer page is manifestation, a short definition is in the glossary, and short answers are in the FAQ. Nothing on this page is for sale.
