Closing the practice

After a few minutes of focusing inward, you need to come all the way back to the room before you stand up. Here's a simple way to do it.

Why the ending matters

You may have spent a few minutes with your own attention: a phrase you chose, your breathing, or a picture you invited into your mind and can also send away. On Arcana Mentis, that's what self-hypnosis means. Ending it well matters as much as starting it. A mind that has been turned inward needs a moment at the door, the way your eyes need a moment to adjust when you step from a dim room into a sunny street. You were never gone, only paying attention in a different direction, and now you'll turn that attention back toward the room.

Coming back through ordinary objects

When you're ready to finish, decide that you're finishing, and tell yourself in your own words that you're bringing your attention back. Open your eyes if they were closed. Feel the chair under you, then your feet, then the air on your face. Look at three objects you could name for a neighbor, like a lamp, a cup, and the corner of the window, and name them silently or aloud. Move your hands, roll your shoulders if that's comfortable, and take a drink of water if you have some nearby. Stay put for another minute with your eyes open before you stand.

These steps tell your senses that the private minutes are over and the kitchen is real. If counting helps, count the objects around you, and use your ordinary voice. Stand when standing feels normal, and if it doesn't yet, stay in the chair a little longer. You're fully back when you could make a cup of tea without a second thought.

Safety first

Never start a practice in a car, on a bike, at a machine, or anywhere your everyday attention keeps people safe. Don't drive, and don't handle anything sharp or hot, until you feel as alert as you do on an ordinary morning. If you feel dreamy, stay in your chair and press your feet into the floor until you can feel the pressure clearly. Being late and fully alert beats being on time and only half back.

If you don't feel fully back

Most of the time the room comes back, and you carry on with the tap, the letter, or the door. Sometimes your attention stays soft, or a feeling you don't like hangs around. If that happens, stop, and don't start another session to fix the first one. Say your name, put both feet on the floor, and look around the room. If you still feel far away, frightened, or unlike yourself, tell someone you trust, and talk with your doctor if the distress stays.

A hard session doesn't mean your medicine has failed, so keep taking any prescribed medicine as prescribed. It's also fine to decide that this practice isn't for you right now.

If you need care

If you feel unwell, far away, or in crisis after a practice, reach out to a person. In the United States, call or text 988 (https://988lifeline.org/). If you're outside the United States, call your local emergency number or a local crisis line. Talk with your doctor if the distress stays, and keep taking any prescribed medicine as prescribed. There's more in the hypnosis room, short definitions of hypnosis and self-hypnosis in the glossary, and short answers in the FAQ. Nothing here is for sale.
